May 14th 2008 Wine Tasting & Dinner Tasting 6.30 PM sharp -- Dinner 8:00PM
.
Wine Tasting
Mr. Norman Gladstone of International Cellars has consented to coordinate the
tasting of wines for the Scandinavian Business Club.
The format will be to compare wines of the same grape varietals from
different regions around the world in order that the complexities and nuances of taste may be compared from disparate wine growing venues.
It will consist of two Chardonnay and five Shiraz or Syrah. We will start with a sample of a sparkling wine: Bleasdale Sparkling Shiraz
Norman will first talk about the wines, followed by the tasting. At the end there will an opportunity to ask questions.
If you like a wine, you will have a chance to purchase it for later pick-up.
During the tasting each table will have bread, cheese and some small “frikadeller” (Danish meat balls) to cleanse your palate.
Afterwards there will be some “smørrebrød” Danish Open Face sandwiches and one hot dish: “Fiske Fillet”
This type of tasting will require a number of volunteers to assist
with pouring the wines and place the wines in the correct order, on
the pre-made placemats. The wines will be numbered from 1 to 7,
starting left to right.
Please let us know if you can assist.
Norman plus volunteers will meet at the Centre by 5pm latest.
Tasting begins at 6:30pm sharp.
Attendance will be capped at 60. Cost: $ 45/person
Members and spouses will be accommodated first.
R.S.V.P. Members must confirm by May 7th. Payment may be sent by cheque to the SBC at the address on the logo above
Note: This kind of event can only accommodate confirmed participants. Due to the logistics and pre-pouring of approximately 500 glasses, we are not able to add more tables or wines at the last minute.
We look forward to welcoming Norman and our Members on May 14th.
President's report
Dear Members:
Although this is a very busy time of the year we had a good turn out at our dinner last week.
Hanne Madsen gave us a very interesting presentation of her family business DanFoss Couriers. It was fascinating to see how the company has grown from a small start up operation to a nation wide, cross-border business in just one generation.
At the dinner, I also had the pleasure of recognizing and thanking Henrik for serving as President for over 6 years, and to present a token of appreciation to him from the Scandinavian Business Club.
This is the time when we evaluate scholarship applications. Please note the deadline for applications is May 15th. Nominations/applications are invited from family of members in good standing. The application form is downloadable from the front page of our website, or you can contact Bjarne for details.
Our next dinner meeting will be a wine tasting event followed by a buffet dinner. The wine tasting featuring eight different wines will be hosted by Norman Gladstone, who is a well known expert on wine. The wine tasting will be limited to 60 persons, so please put May 14 in you calendar, and book early to secure a spot.
Let's meet on Wednesday, May 14 for a very interesting evening at the Club!
Best regards,
Jan

Bornholm Akvavit is now available in BC Liquor Stores; it comes in a 700ml bottle at the cost of $30.79. This Akvavit isn’t as strongly flavoured as “Rød Ålborg” and is a very palatable product. If your local store doesn’t carry it, please ask the manager to bring in one or a few bottles for you. It is here on a trial basis as a recommended replacement by the Scandinavian Community and if it does well etc

Bornholmer Akvavit 40 %

The German Akvavit is now available in BC Liqour stores, the cost is $34.72. I am told, it is similar in taste to the Norwegian Linie Akvavit.
